Located in the eastern sector of the Region of Valparaíso, the Aconcagua Valley is the last of the "transversal valleys" that cross eastward from the Andes to the Pacific from the Atacama Region to Valparaíso. These valleys hold a significant portion of Chile's natural heritage, including wilderness and imposing mountains. Situated just 80 km north of Santiago, this area is irrigated by the Aconcagua River, which flows into the Pacific at Concón, a coastal town north of Valparaíso.
This is one of Chile's most fertile valleys and one of the country's most important regions for agriculture and livestock activities. Its strong "huasa" tradition has made the Aconcagua Valley a center for traditional cultural festivals that include "la trilla a yegua suelta," held in the locality of Putaendo, and other horsemanship displays and rodeos.
San Felipe and Los Andes are two of the valley's most characteristic locales, but the valley is filled with small villages with a wealth of history and tradition that will make your visit a unique experience.
If you are interested in the majestic Aconcagua landscape, head to Serranía del Ciprés. Located in the heart of the valley and set against the backdrop of the Bellavista Range, this project was launched in order to protect the mountain cypresses that grow here at more than 2,000 meters above sea level. The reserve, which includes a picnic area, is easily accessible by vehicle and has some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the region, which will show you the true nature of the great Aconcagua Valley. Spring and fall are the best times to visit and camp.
The recently opened nature park San Francisco de Los Andes, a private venture dedicated to conservation, offers opportunities for fly fishing enthusiasts and those who want to learn. Highlights include the San Francisco Ravine, which is abundantly stocked with brown trout. Located just 100 km from Santiago, the park also offers trail rides, excursions and paragliding.
