Lake Chungará, A Mirror on the Altiplano

On your way to Lake Chungará, be sure to visit Parinacota and the wetlands fed by the Cotacotani Lagoon. You can watch local animals "eating breakfast" in the morning, and if you decide to stay the night, you can camp at one of several designated sites. The Nevados Payachatas, twin snow-capped volcanoes that tower 6,500-meter high (their names are Pomerape and Parinacota), are a preview of the spectacular scenery that awaits you at the lake.

Surrounded by wetlands and soaring peaks like the Payachatas, Sajama and Guallatiri, the lake has a 1 km circular trail with many lookout points so you can take in the impressive scenery and revel in the glory and majesty of Andes Mountains.

Tips

01

Plan your trip Gas Altiplano winter
Leave early for Lake Chungará so that you'll have time to stop at the many other interesting sights along the way. Choose a vehicle suitable for travel on dirt roads. Make sure to bring enough gas as there are no service stations en route. In February, you may get rain from the "Altiplano winter" phenomenon. It is very cold and there is usually snow during the winter months.

02

Altitude sickness
Move slowly to minimize the effects of altitude sickness, which is caused by a lack of oxygen.
