Adventure Tourism in the Wilderness of Cochamó

Located 138 km from Puerto Montt, the Cochamó Valley was virtually unknown until recently. It offers 20,000 hectares of dense forest, hiking trails and granite peaks that are ideal for climbing, and its rugged landscape is inhabited by pumas and condors. You could say that Cochamó is a secret that has been passed on by word of mouth. Want some advice? Go now, while you can still have this magical place almost all to yourself.

The small town of Cochamó has just one long street. You can find lodging in basic hotels surrounded by lush green foliage on all sides and enjoy offer hearty southern breakfasts in their dining rooms. The picturesque church, built Chiloé style with alerce wood, dates back to 1906. According to local legend, if a jote (a species of bird) alights on the top of the cross and spreads its wings, three of the townsfolk will die.

While you're in town, you can arrange guided horse rides, boat trips, and kayaking expeditions. The road into the valley is the same route that was plied by oxen transporting goods between Chile and Argentina over the León Pass. There are several campsites and a number of refuges on the mountainside where you can gather your strength while enjoying a tea called mate before setting out among the alerce and oak trees that populate this stunning and lonely landscape.

Cochamó is the northern gateway to Patagonia and a rock climber's paradise. Its granite peaks offer pitches of varying levels of difficulty with heights ranging from 20 to 1000 meters, as high as the legendary big walls of Yosemite.
