Isla Negra

Pablo Neruda's Isla Negra home has become a magnet for admirers of the Nobel Prize winning poet who died in 1973.

Neruda fell in love with the landscape of this small fishing village and the property where he built his beach house when he arrived here in 1939. It became his favorite place because he found it easy to concentrate here while gazing out at the immense Pacific Ocean. As the years went by, the house grew in size and complexity. Today you can visit the property and tour this veritable museum, which reflects the writer's genius and passion for collecting special objects. Isla Negra houses over 3,500 items from around the world including masks, dozens of transparent bottles, large tinted glass jars, photographs of Whitman and Rimbaud and a complete collection of prow figureheads, one of the poet's favorites.

Don't miss the chance to tour Neruda's bedroom with its stunning view of the sea and the suit Neruda wore when he received the Nobel Prize for Literature. The gardens are home to other attractions including a train, a bell, a boat, a water fountain and the tombs of Neruda and his wife, Matilde Urrutia. At Isla Negra, you will feel that Pablo's spirit lives on.
